School of Human Ecology - Wayfinding

The School of Human Ecology at UW-Madison is a destination space, as it houses a cafe, printing center, and classrooms that are used by everyone on campus; however, finding these spaces can be a little difficult. As a part of an internship project, I collaborated with a professor, student employees, and a number of associate deans to create signage solutions to guide users to these major destinations spaces.

An added element to this internship project after speaking to numerous professors was creating single use restrooms signage for non-binary or transgender individuals. The School of Human Ecology is an inclusive environment that welcomes every visitor with open arms.

In terms of a design ethos, roundness and softened elements, exciting colors, and bold fonts evoke a welcoming feeling. The additional design drivers behind the system were to be direct, overstated, and modern to ease the wayfinding experience and direct people where they need to go in the most efficient manner. Lastly, the use of icons and easy to read typeface emphasize accessibility and universality while still remaining playful.
